Tell us about yourself and EcoLuxe Fashion.
I have been working in education for the entirety of my career, but I have always loved fashion. Early in my career I had the opportunity to teach English as a Foreign Language abroad, in Rome. I learned a lot about fashion while I was there. Fashion in Italy was something to be savored, enjoyed and discussed. It was literally a topic of conversation at the dinner table-men and women all chimed in with their thoughts! That love of fashion always stayed with me. I started EcoLuxeFashion because, over the years I found myself wanting to be more and more sustainable, and fashion seemed like the next logical step. As I learned about the injustices within the fast fashion community, the more the intersections of social justice between education and fashion became clear. What I once thought of as very divergent interests are actually intersected by my desire to help create a more just world.
What is fast fashion & why is it important?
Fast Fashion is harmful to the planet and to our fellow world citizens. It’s a way of manufacturing clothing while disregarding the environment and the people who make the clothes. Fast fashion also relies on a scarcity mindset as a way to market to the consumer. Fast fashion pushes the idea that there is never enough in your own closet and that a void must be filled by purchasing more and more, at an increasingly fast pace.
Affordability is a legitimate concern and can be thought of in several ways.
Think of Your Closet as a Dynamic & Creative Entity: This allows you to ‘play’ with their clothes more. We all have more clothing in our closets than we need and probably have things we have never worn. It is important to take a look at what you have, remove what is no longer useful and get creative with what’s left. I have multiple blogs on my website dedicated to the capsule wardrobe. Creating a capsule wardrobe will help you be more creative with your fashion.
Buy Less, but Better Quality: When you have less to buy, you can spend more on one item. Sustainable fashion tends to be more expensive because the textiles are treated with care and the people making your clothes are paid a living wage. So, instead of buying $100 worth of fast fashion, (which will all have to be replaced within the next 6-9 months because it is designed to fall apart) take that money and buy just one item that will last for years. The rule of thumb is 30 wears; when buying something new ask yourself, “Will I wear this at least 30 times before I get rid of it?” You can then calculate the cost per wear. That $100 just became $3.33 for each time you wear it. To be honest, I keep my clothes for much longer than 30 wears, I have items in my closet that are over 20 years old.
It’s about knowing your style really well and buying things that are going to last. If I’m really wanting something that I can’t find new in sustainable brands, then I look for other options like renting or shopping thrifted or vintage.
What is sustainability & what made you want to focus on it?
There are many entry points to sustainability in fashion. However the most common is usually a focus on where the textiles and materials come from (i.e. organic cotton, recycled plastics) and the process with which the textiles are made (i.e. less water consumption, less chemicals in the dyeing process). However, for me, sustainability is important because when a brand and consumer look at ‘healthy practices’ for the earth and for ourselves, they will start to uncover that these healthier practices also affect the garment workers themselves.
For me, sustainability is a path that leads to ethical fashion which is not just how the textiles are treated, but more importantly how the people are treated. It is important to know who the people are behind the clothes. It is important to ask and find out:
Who worked with the textiles to create the colors? Who sewed these garments? How has the fashion industry affected their surrounding living conditions?
Once you start looking it will become immediately clear that there is no justice in fashion. It is up to us, consumers, to demand justice and fair treatment. We do that with our dollars, where and how we spend our money makes a difference.
Why is it important for Latinx to care about sustainable fashion?
Sustainable and ethical fashion is a social justice issue. It is in our own self interest to care about the planet and other people, including those who are making our clothes. Fashion is the second largest industry that has slave labor associated with it. We have the opportunity to interrupt old paradigms and instead promote the cause of peace simply by the clothes we choose to wear, and importantly the clothes we choose not to wear.

Una vez que empieces a buscar, quedará inmediatamente claro que no hay justicia en la moda. Depende de nosotros, los consumidores, exigir justicia y un trato justo. Hacemos eso con nuestro dinero, dónde y cómo gastamos nuestro dinero marca la diferencia.
¿Por qué es importante para los Latinx preocuparse por la moda sostenible? La moda sostenible y ética es una cuestión de justicia social. Es de nuestro propio interés preocuparnos por el planeta y otras personas, incluidas las que están haciendo nuestra ropa. La moda es la segunda industria más grande que tiene trabajo esclavo asociado.
