What to do when you find out life in plastic is not so fantastic.

July is #plasticfreejuly, a month supported by a foundation with a goal to reduce the use of plastic waste. Plastic is literally everywhere, and while there are some things that are made of plastic that are extremely helpful, let's face it, we use A LOT of plastic-made things that we could easily switch out. Now, we're not going to sit here and demand that you go out and buy all types of products to replace everything around your house. However, there are some easy switches that are not only sustainable and inexpensive but easy to do. We know that Latinx are pros at reusing plastic ware (raise your hand if you've ever been catfished by the butter or yogurt container being filled with beans 🙋🏽♀️), so we decided not to include those. Because you know, I think we've got that down. Read through this list and tell us what you think! Do you think you could make the decision to do these switches? #6 may be the hardest one .

# 1: Reemplaza las bolsas de plástico de la tienda con tus propias bolsas de tela o malla.
Esta la compramos en Whole Foods, pero tambien se pueden encontrar en varias tiendas como Target y supermercados. O, si sabes coser o tejer, puedes hacer tu propio diseńo.

Replace the store's plastic bags with your own cloth or mesh bags. We bought these at Whole Foods, but they can also be found in various stores such as Target and grocery stores. Or, if you know how to sew or knit, you can make your own design.
#2: Use jabones naturales que tengan una envoltura mínima para reemplazar el gel de baño, el lavado de cara e incluso el shampoo y acondicionador. Nos lavamos el cuerpo y la cara con jabones que compramos en una de nuestras tiendas locales favoritas, Buff City Soap. Su barra facial de carbón es INCREÍBLE y deja tu cara extremadamente limpia. Use natural soaps that have minimal wrapping to replace body wash, face wash, and even soap and conditioner. We wash our body and face using soaps that we buy from one of our favorite local stores, Buff City Soap. Their charcoal facial bar is AMAZING and leaves your face extremely clean. All their packaging is minimal. You can find other brands online and maybe even at your local grocery or health store. We've tried to make the switch to bar conditioner and soaps, but so far, we have not found something that works for thick hair, especially if it's curly.
#3: Deja tu cepillo de dientes de plástico y cambia a un cepillo de bambú. Tu cepillo de dientes de plástico de hace 10 años probablemente todavía se esté en algún lugar de esta Tierra, tomando espacio. Que feo, la verdad. Leave your plastic toothbrush and switch to a bamboo brush. Your plastic toothbrush from 10 years ago is probably still chilling somewhere on this Earth taking space. Is that not disappointing? Bamboo toothbrushes are great because the handle is compostable, and the bristles can be recycled. If they are not recycled and thrown in the trash, it is at least less waste than a regular toothbrush. To compost the handle, you just yank out the bristles with plyers. This is also weirdly satisfying. These toothbrushes are almost in every grocery store but can be hard to find. For some reason, in one Kroger I went to, they had it in the diaper aisle instead of the toothbrush aisle. The only brand we have used is WooBamboo, because they are inexpensive.

Say goodbye to plastic bags from the grocery stores and switch it to a sturdy reusable bag. Many grocery stores are eventually fading away plastic bags. You may live in a state where if you do not have a plastic bag, they charge you. In the state of Tennesse where most of our team lives, that's not the case. Using paper bags is a good option, but they aren't always available. Tote bags are sold almost everywhere and even given out for free at events. If you're crafty, you can even make your own.
#5: Deja de beber agua embotellada en plástico y cambia a una taza reutilizable. Beber agua de recipientes de plástico no es tan bueno para tu salud, muchas veces el agua que contiene no es tan diferente del agua de la llave. Las botellas de agua reutilizables son la mejor opcion, especialmente si vives en un lugar donde puedes llenarla fácilmente. Te ahorra tirar botellas de plástico. Stop drinking bottled water in plastic and switch to a reusable cup.
First of all, drinking water from plastic containers is not as good for your health, and the water in it is not that different from tap water. Reusable water bottles are the way to go, especially if you live in a place where you can easily refill. It saves you from throwing away plastic bottles and in the long term. We use Klean Kanteen and Yeti, both of which are insulated and come in various sizes, from coffee mugs to large bottles. While the initial cost may be more than a pack of bottled water, it's more budget-friendly in the long run.
